A list of breastfeeding benefits

10 reasons to breastfeed.

Breastfeeding has gained more popularity and acceptance in the past years. Many women, who in the past might of formula fed, are realizing that breast is best. Here are my top ten reasons I breastfeed:

1. Promotes an awesome mommy and baby bond

A baby needs to be held and the skin to skin contact that that is created through breastfeeding is extremely beneficial for both you and your baby. Breastfeeding promotes oxytocin, the “love hormone", making it easier to develop an emotional bond between you and your infant.

2. Helps protect against illness

Antibodies in breast milk are customized to your babies needs. Every time your baby is exposed to a new germ your body produces antibodies to fight that germ.

3. Post-pregnancy advantages

Breastfeeding promotes oxytocin which aids in uterine contractions, enabling the uterus to shrink to it's pre-pregnancy size. Breastfeeding also helps reduce the risk of postpartum depression, ovarian cancer as well as breast cancer.

4. Convenience

Your babies meal is always ready wherever you are. The exact quantity she needs and perfect temperature with zero preparation.

5. Reduces chances of having allergies

Breastfed babies have fewer allergies because they are exposed to fewer allergens in the first months of life. Breast milk does not contain cow's milk or soy products. Less exposure to these foods means less chance of allergies later on.

6. Reduces the risk of SIDS

Breastfed babies sleep less deeply and are more likely to awake if there is a problem with their breathing.

7. A higher IQ

Studies have shown breastfed children scoring an average of seven to ten points higher than those formula fed.

8. Provides perfect nutrition

Breast milk contains everything an infant needs to thrive and puts the nutrients where they belong, in your babies blood. The nutrients, vitamins, minerals, enzymes and protein all work together to aid in digestion and absorption so your baby gets the most out of each feeding.

9. Human milk for human babies

It is the natural choice. Breast milk is not a processed food. There are no synthetic hormones, no genetically engineered materials and is never contaminated with bacteria. Breast milk has never been recalled.

10. It's Free!

Loved reading this top 10 list! I exclusively breast fed both of my beautiful children and I absolutely agree with everything you wrote. My children have always been super healthy and I totally believe it has created a bond that will never be broken. My # 11 would be~ no bottles to wash and sterilize. Great job on highlighting all of the wonderful benefits!!!
